Ho, ho, the Mistletoe: History &Tradition
Kissing under the mistletoe during Christmas, just one of those things we do for fun- and without questioning it. According to theholidayspot.com, the mistletoe has been one of the most magical, mysterious, and sacred plants of European folklore. It was considered to give life and fertility, protection against poison, and as an aphrodisiac.
So how did kissing under the mistletoe come about?
It was first associated with the Greek festival of Saturnalia and later with primitive marriage rites. It started in Scandinavia, where it was considered a plant of peace, under which enemies could declare a truce or warring spouses kiss and make-up. Later, the eighteenth-century English credited with a certain magical appeal called a kissing ball. At Christmas time if young lady standing under a ball of mistletoe cannot refuse to be kissed. If the girl remained unkissed, she cannot expect not to marry the following year. Over the centuries, traditions evolved, yet stayed. Many European countries have carried on the tradition, making it a fun and kiss-worthy holiday custom. So pucker up!
