U.S. Wedding Destinations You Haven’t Thought of, Part 1

By Erin Schneckloth

The wedding location is a very tough decision for many couples. If you know you want something out of the ordinary, but are afraid to venture into foreign territory (quite literally), consider tying the knot within the United States.

There are plenty of things to consider, however, before selecting a favorite getaway, childhood vacation spot, or a new place. Factors like budget (perhaps first and foremost), bridal party members’ budgets, and the ability for your bridal party and guests to travel to and from the destination with ease should be seriously considered.

I refer to U.S.-based weddings away from hometowns and current residencies as being semi-destination. If you’ve decided that having a semi-destination wedding is for you and your fiancé, consider the following U.S. destinations. I have visited, and even lived near, each location, and each is perhaps a bit out of the ordinary. Some are wallet-friendly, but all are romantic – and your guests will be guaranteed an unforgettable time.

Apalachicola, FL
A quaint Gulf fishing town

(Clockwise from top left: Apalachicola, talesfromtheroad.com; me, dining in Apalachicola in 2006; a bride and groom at the Old Time Soda Fountain, Paradise Images; Coombs Inn.)

My fiancé and I fell in love with this fishing town on a trip to St. George Island, about 10 miles away. Here you’ll find adorable bed and breakfasts, seafood cuisine at restaurants with verandas overlooking the town, and even the Old Time Soda Fountain. There are beaches aplenty, too. A word of caution: this destination is not for the adventurous at heart. If you’re looking for relaxation and an intimate affair along with the romance of the Gulf Coast, this is a marvelous spot.

Here’s a sampling of what Apalachicola has to offer:

Wedding: Lafayette Park, which offers a view of the bay and a large open gazebo.

Reception: Try Coombs Inn, an award-winning bed and breakfast located in the heart of Apalachicola. The water is just a walk away. Rooms start at $119. http://www.coombshouseinn.com/

Must-see: Dixie Theatre, http://dixietheatre.com/; St. George Island, http://www.stgeorgeisland.com/.

Santa Fe, NM
A colorful town full of culture and intrigue

(Clockwise from top left: Downtown Santa Fe during a festival; me, in 2008; a bride and groom at their wedding, photo by Rick Scibelli; The Inn and Spa at Loretto.)

Tucked in the high elevations of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains about 60 miles north of Albuquerque, Santa Fe is a town full of vitality. Santa Fe offers so much, and has one of the highest concentrations of art galleries in the United States. There are spas, world-class restaurants and museums, and a bustling unique downtown. If you’re looking for Southwest flavor, you’ve found your destination.

Places not to miss:

Wedding: Storeybook Chapel, for a very intimate celebration; The Santa Fe Museum of Fine Arts, also available as a reception site. Both, http://www.santafewedding.com/.

Reception: Try the Inn and Spa at Loretto, a hotel in the heart of downtown that gives the true flavor of the Southwest. Weddings and receptions. Rooms start at $179. http://www.innatloretto.com/.

Must-see: Museum of International Folk Art, http://www.internationalfolkart.org/; Ten Thousand Waves day spa, http://www.tenthousandwaves.com/; Chocolate Maven Bakery & Café, http://www.chocolatemaven.com/

Tune in soon for Part 2 for a look at New Orleans, Malibu, and Grand Lake, CO.

Guest bride blogger Erin Schneckloth

When Weddingish approached me about being a guest blogger, I couldn’t resist the idea of sharing my thoughts and insights with potential brides.  But I couldn’t help but think: What do I have to share?

Plenty, I’ve discovered.

Since I began the wedding planning nearly six months ago, I’ve learned more than I ever thought I would know about weddings.  And I have discovered I have a sincere love of weddings, as well.  All that I’ve been through so far as a bride-to-be, like the research, flipping through countless bridal magazines, and setting up appointments with the endless list of vendors, have all added to my experience.  It’s an exhausting process.  A note for fellow brides to keep in mind: you are planning the most fabulous party of your life!

My fiancé and I have a very intimate affair set for this coming June in Colorado, over 1,000 miles away from our place in Los Angeles.  The first hurdle to planning this semi-destination wedding was planning our event based on only one trip through Colorado to meet with all our vendors, and that was in October – nine months before our wedding.  Having a small budget with which to work has presented its challenges, too.  Come to think of it, there have been several hurdles to overcome!

I am so excited to share my story, insights, inspiration and knowledge with the readers of the Weddingish blog.  I will revisit the planning and work I have done thus far, the work that has yet to be finished, and all the decisions and choices along the way.  Feel free to ask any questions, as well – I would love to hear from you!

Until next time…

Tangerine and Turquoise Tango

If you’re planning a Spring or Summer 2010 wedding, look no further for inspiration. Wedding colors for next year are shifting from traditional pastels to bold splashes of color. A hot wedding combination is tangerine and turquoise. This dramatic duo creates a tropical feel and is perfect for beach weddings or destination weddings by sea. The warmth and boldness of the tangerine and turquoise hues will compliment the weather and tropics of any destination wedding.
